About the Item
Carl-Axel Acking was a Swedish architect, author and furniture designer, winner of the Lunning Prize in 1952. This “Trienna” model was designed in 1957 and was presented at the Milano Triennial that year, as part of the Swedish exhibit. The chair was made by NK (Nordiska Kompaniet), and was originally named "Acking", but this was later changed to “Trienna” because of where it was first exhibited.
This chair is crafted from leather and oak. The leather features a unique patina, giving the chair even more depth and character to its already wonderful, sculptural nature. It is one of Carl-Axel Acking’s best known and most sought after designs. Although the chair bears some resemblance to Børge Mogensen's iconic "Spanish Chair", Acking's design predates Mogensen's by two years. This chair blends three main elements: Swedish craftsmanship, the clean lines of modernism and the clear-eyed practicality of functionalism. The design blends these elements with the use of exquisite materials to create a chair that is both visually historical and modern. Thanks to the material’s qualities, the seat is very ergonomic, adapting to the sitter’s shape. The seat is raised and the back reclined for comfort, making this chair perfect for lounging as well. The Swedish architect and furniture designer, Carl-Axel Acking, made a name for himself thanks to his innovative modern furniture designs for Nordiska Kompaniet in the 1950s. The company was founded in Stockholm in 1902, and was built on international models and had, among other things, Sweden's first escalator. By the end of the 1950s, most public environments - such as restaurants, banks, hotels, embassies, steamships, etc. - had been decorated by NK.

NK (Nordiska Kompaniet)
Since its inception, luxury retailer Nordiska Kompaniet, known affectionately to its customers as “NK,” has offered an influential platform for innovators in furniture design. Its department stores in Stockholm and Gothenburg, Sweden, have been home to many of the top names in mid-century modern design and in Scandinavian modernism. Admired for its production of high-quality pieces, it continues to support forward-looking designers.
Nordiska Kompaniet was founded in 1902 through the merger of the companies K.M. Lundberg and Joseph Leja. Its founder, Josef Sachs, envisioned a department store as a cultural arena that would rival the luxury stores of Paris. He opened a flagship store in Stockholm in 1915. Early on, the brand set its sights on quality furniture making, bringing on master cabinetmaker Axel Einar Hjorth, who headed its production from 1927 to 1938.
The Stockholm Exhibition of 1930 was pivotal for both Nordiska Kompaniet and the world of design as a whole. NK’s installation, designed by Sven Markelius, positioned the artist as a key influencer and force majeure of Swedish functionalism.
Nordiska Kompaniet has continued to hire renowned designers throughout its operations, including such luminaries as Carl Bergsten, David Rosen and Gio Ponti. Many iconic sofas, lounge chairs, bookcases and dining room tables from the mid-century modern period originated in its furniture shop. The brand has also been at the forefront of textile, ceramic and wallpaper design, with artists Berndt Friberg, Josef Frank, Stig Lindberg and Elsa Gullberg among those who have contributed to NK’s brand legacy.
To cater to its growing customer base, Nordiska Kompaniet opened a second store in Gothenburg in 1971. Today, NK continues to provide patronage to top designers, remaining a leader in high-end furniture production.

This is a beautiful Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen designed model “FD 144” easy chair, made in Denmark in 1953. It was produced by France & Daverkosen Denmark.
This solid oak FD-144 Easy Chair by the designer duo, has distinctive, wide and imposing bent armrests. The darker teak wood on the armrests and legs emphasises the elegant lines of this chair. The back is supported with a series of slender spindles that stand out as the main design element of this model.
The chair comes with two loose cushions that have been recently reupholstered in a premium bouclé fabric. Both cushions feature button tufting, giving a classic look. This chair is a Danish mid-century piece to its core, uniting functionality with and understated, yet interesting and elegant design.

About the designer:
Hvidt & Mølgaard were the founders of the Copenhagen-based, Danish design and architectural firm which existed from 1944 until 2009. Founded by Peter Hvidt (1916-1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907-1993), the company was a pioneering force in Danish furniture design and industrialized production in the 1950s, creating furniture that was easy to mass-produce and economic to transport.
Danish architect-designer Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen was born in 1907. His formative years were spent in Copenhagen, studying at the Aalborg Technical School and at the Art and Crafts School of the Design Museum. From 1931 until 1934, he continued his studies in furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under the instruction of Kaare Klint. Peter Hvidt was born in Copenhagen in 1916. He studied architecture and cabinetry at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. Subsequently, he worked at various design firms before establishing his own studio in 1942.
