About the Item

A good George II antique oak tavern box settle bench, circa 1750. The settle having a high paneled back, with four horizontal fielded panels and six corresponding vertical panels, the settle having scrolled arms at each side supported by bobbin turned uprights. The base having a lift up lid enclosing a large storage area, the front of the box base with four horizontal fielded panels ans the settle is raised on a plinth base. The settle is made from solid stained oak and has just been lovingly waxed in Bloomsbury's workshops, condition is very good, the settle is sturdy and will seat up to four guests. Many such plain settles like this were after carved in the Victorian period of the late 19th century, this settle is true to the day is was made. Such box settles were commonly seen in taverns and coffee shops of the mid 1700s in London and the provinces, one can imagine such luminaries & writers such as Dr Samuel Johnson or James Boswell seated and arguing the issues of the day. This handsome antique mid 18th century settle is ready to grace your space.
