Antique Jacobean 17th Century Oak Settle Bench Shakespeare Ann Hathaway 1610

About the Item

A rare antique oak settle from the Reign of King James I (1603-1625), the settle having provenance from Anne Hathaway's (Shakespeare's wife) cottage, Stratford-upon-Avon. A tall back, yet diminutive Jacobean oak settle, the six panel back having side wings to the top. The armrests with scrolled ends and the settle is raised on turned and blocked legs. The bench is of joined & pegged form and has traces (particularly on the back) of the use of an adze (a rudimentary tool for planning wood shaped like an axe). The settle has a few ancient minor repairs (to be expected) and has a great color with a rich patina built up over 400 years, the bench is stable and ready to be used for its a original purpose for seating and would have originally been against a wall. Provenance; The settle was acquired from a family in Warwickshire, England, who had family history of this and one other matching settle that had been part of the furnishings of Anne Hathaway's (William Shakespeare's wife) cottage in Stratford-Upon-Avon.
