About the Item

Very rare Mid Century Modern, plinth base, solid oak bench designed by Harvey Probber for his ‘series 70’ line. Believe this to be a prototype and one of the earliest iterations of this bench. On the bench under the cushion the date 9/2/44 is written and his company, Harvey Probber Inc, wasn't founded until 1945. Was found with an failing ebony finish. Was refinished to match. Looks solid black from a distance but as you get close you can see the perfect amount of wood grain peak through. Reupholstered in a high quality champagne velvet blend fabric. Bench is extremely high quality with solid oak plinth base and sides. Each cushion fits snuggly in position with solid oak spacers separating them. Bench is 70.5” long 24” deep and 17.5” tall. Original owner was a editor for a fashion magazine in Miami. This bench was in his waiting room. Exceptional example of design by one of the greats of the era. Quality is on par with designers such as T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings, Edward Wormley, and Paul McCobb.
