They worked together from the 1940s to the 1960s, and their work is characterized by its clean lines, sculptural forms, and use of new materials. Erwine Laverne was born in 1909 in Austria and trained as an architect in Europe. Estelle Laverne was born in 1917 in New York City and studied at the Art Students League. The couple met in New York in the 1930s and began working together in the 1940s.

The Lavernes' furniture designs were often made from materials such as fiberglass, aluminum, and lucite, which were relatively new and unusual at the time. Their designs were functional and practical, but also had a sculptural quality that made them stand out. Some of their most famous designs include the Laverne "Cloud" sofa, which was made from fiberglass and had a flowing, organic shape, and the Laverne "Stretcher" chair, which was made from lucite and had a minimalist, geometric form. The Lavernes' work was recognized with numerous awards, including the Museum of Modern Art's Good Design Award in 1950 and 1951. Their designs continue to be celebrated for their innovative use of materials and sculptural forms, and their work is represented in many museum collections around the world.
