Long "Krobo" Table/Bench in Rosewood by Torbjørn Afdal for Bruksbo, Norway, 1960

About the Item

Introducing a rare, fully restored long “Krobo” bench designed by the influential Torbjørn Afdal for Bruksbo. Constructed from a mix of solid and veneered Brazilian rosewood with stunning variegated woodgrains unique to the species this bench features a custom, hand-made seat with full grain leather and a felt-covered underside to allow the seat to slide from end of the bench to the other without causing any scratches. The custom seat, with it's rugged leather, is an homage to the late great Afdal's affinity for incorporating both leather and rosewood in his large body of work. Born in 1917, Torbjørn Afdal was an influential and prolific furniture designer from Norway who helped lead the Scandinavian Modern Design movement throughout the 60's and 70's. In 1946 Afdal graduated from the National Academy of Craft and Art Industry and then went on to work for Bruksbo Tegnekontor at the Bruksbo Drawing Office. As his career progressed he rose to become the top designer at Bruksbo where he would design a plethora of now iconic pieces. His designs are known for their minimal and captivating shapes - some of which were loved and owned by the likes of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and the Emperor of Japan. Additionally, he designed the office of Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Bruntland during her terms. Afdal primarily used teak and rosewood in his designs as well as leather and steel. His designs correspond to traditional Scandinavian and Danish design, focusing on clean lines and ergonomic structure which are all on full display in this iconic “Krobo” long bench. Able to function both as a bench or as a long coffee table this versatile piece is as functional as it is aesthetically mesmerizing. With it's custom-made bench seat, breathtaking woodgrains and fresh restoration this bench - an ultra-rare long version - won't last long. Able to blend seamlessly against a multitude of design backdrops from Mid-Century Modern to Minimalism to Contemporary this table/bench is perfect in both home or office settings and sure to make a BOLD imp ression in any space it inhabits. Make it yours today before it's gone forever. ---Dimensions--- Width: 79 in / 200.66 cm Depth: 14.5 in / 36.83 cm Height: 13.25 in / 33.66 cm This iconic bench by Torbjørn Afdal for Bruksbo has recently undergone a comprehensive restoration process and the results speak for themselves. The mix of solid and veneered Brazilian rosewood has been hand-sanded and refinished in accordance with the original techniques and materials and shows no scratches, gouges or stains whatsoever. The seat, hand-made from full-grain leather, shows only the wear of a once live animal such as scars. The underside of the seat as been covered in a soft felt to allow the seat to slide from end of the bench to the other without causing any friction or scratches. The seat measures; 40" x 14" x 3". This architecturally fascinating bench is functional, structurally sound and ready for a literal lifetime more of use thanks to it's recent restoration.
