Orig. CHARLESTON BATTERY BENCH, Lowcountry Cypress & Cast Iron, Dk. Green, 4 ft.
About the Item
This is the BIRLANT exclusive original CHARLESTON BATTERY BENCH with heaviest weight cast iron sides made from the 19th century original pattern and durable South Carolina cypress slats. It is hand painted in our dip tank (not thinly spray-painted) with the best quality exterior alkyd enamel in the traditional Charleston dark green color.
A Brief History of the Charleston Battery Bench.
After researching through many old photographs and records of the City of Charleston and its historic Battery, we have determined that the first use of a Charleston Battery Bench was during the latter part of the 19th century and was made by the John F. Riley Iron Works in Charleston to beautify the Battery's White Point Gardens after the destruction caused by The Civil War.
Mr. Birlant, founder of GEO. C. BIRLANT & CO., purchased the original bench mold pattern and the exclusive rights to produce the bench from the Riley Iron Works when they ceased doing business in the early 1940's and have faithfully continued their production in the rear of our King Street store ever since. We ask that you notice the beautiful design of the casting which indicates some of the fauna and flora indigenous to South Carolina during the late 19th century, including the inverted South Carolina parakeet (now extinct), a fox head indicating the sporting life in the Lowcountry, a greyhound's head representing the dog races that occurred at that time and stylized leaves depicting the palmetto, our state tree.
Each and every cypress wood slat is hand sanded and inspected and the cast iron sides are handled in a similar manner. The sides and slats are immersed in our large paint tank for full thick coverage (not thinly spray painted). We use only the finest outdoor industrial enamel paint and the carriage bolts and nuts are stainless steel so your bench will last. Each one is made of the finest materials in the rear of our showroom in Charleston. Compare to other outdoor benches that sell in excess of $1,000. Offered in four-foot size (as shown), 30-inch chair bench, six-foot double bench and eight-foot double bench. (Please request pricing for other sizes). Custom sizes too upon request.
Benches are shipped disassembled and are very easy to put together with the stainless steel nuts & bolts provided.
Replacement parts, slats and nuts & bolts are also available directly from our website.
BENCHES ORDERED WILL TYPICALLY BE DELIVERED IN 2-4 WEEKS. Shipping prices are per EACH bench, shipped disassembled via UPS.
