Paul Láslzó Bench in Mahogany and Cane

About the Item

Paul László for Glenn of California, bench or sofa, mahogany, cane, United States, 1950 This sofa or bench, a creation of Paul László, contains a well-preserved caned back and seat. The sofa's legs gracefully angle outward, accentuating their clean, linear design. The mahogany frame serves the dual purpose of supporting the cane seat and holding up the backrest. Additionally, the rich mahogany wood extends to the sides, forming a distinctive, almost handle-like geometric feature. Paul László (1900-1993) was an American-Hungarian architect, interior designer and furniture designer. Láslzó, born in Hungary, grew up within a family of cabinetmakers. At the age of 25 he founded his own design firm in Stuttgart where he developed an original modernist language. Already at that point in his career did László gain widespread attention from prominent figures such as George Nelson. In 1936 Lászlo left Hungary in fear of the Nazi regime. Here he opened his own design studio in New York. Quickly, he became known within the elite scene and designed pieces and interiors for Elizabeth Taylor, Barbary Stanwyck and Ronald Reagan. His designs are now seen as typical Californian Modern. László established this by means of mix between the strictly Classic Viennese school, clean European modernism and comfortable elegant American lush and voluminous design. Please note that this piece is in used condition and is in need of restoring of the cane. Restoration can be done before shipping by our experienced craftsmen and -women in our own in-house restoration atelier. With high attention for the original, they make sure every piece contains its value and is ready for the many years to come. We kindly ask you to contact our design experts for further information about the endless possibilities our restoration and upholstery atelier has to offer. Of course, a locally organized restoration is possible as well.
