Spindle Back Bench in Walnut and Ash

About the Item

Contemporary walnut bench handmade by Brian Holcombe utilizing the techniques of traditional Windsor chair making combined with traditional mortise and tenon joinery similar to that utilized for timber framed structures. The bench is shown in walnut but can be made in a large variety of woods such as mahogany, cherry, ash, white oak or ebonized quarter sawn oak. The spindles, in order to retain their flexibility must be made from ash or oak. These spindles are riven from lengths of wood, the technique of riving follows the wood's natural grain orientation allowing the material to be flexible and strong. Traditionally this requires woods with a long grain structure, such as ash and oak. Oak spindles will be ebonized if the quarter sawn ebonized oak is chosen. The ebonizing process is done in the centuries old traditional manner, it produces a beautifully strong dark ebony finish on oak which allows the grain to show well under the surface. White Oak can be finished either in a traditonal oil or a contemporary white oil if a lighter finish is preferred.
