Thonet Michael Vienna Pair Of Biedermeier Style Benches In Wood And Velvet

About the Item

We kindly suggest that you read the entire description, as with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to ensure the authenticity of our objects. Rare and iconic pair of beechwood benches; the tall, comfortable seat, deliberately curved in the center, is made with springs and green velvet upholstery; the legs are slightly curved outward to increase the stability of the bench. The benches are in their original condition, the wooden structure is good and solid, so we did not consider doing any restoration because their authentic appearance makes them truly alluring and fascinating and attests to their antiquity and authenticity; moreover, everyone can provide a simple upholstery by choosing the color of the fabric in a personal way to match their own furniture. Both of them, on the inside of one leg, have a metal plate with the name of the famous and prestigious manufacturer: Thonet (see photo) and were made by the company itself between 1950 and 1953 to Frankenberg, Germany, where the company moved from Vienna in 1889.. The history of the Thonet company is very interesting. A German cabinetmaker since 1819, as early as 1830 Michael Thonet experimented with new possibilities to produce furniture industrially by hot-bending plywood and solid wood to make his famous chairs with elegantly sinuous lines and throughout his furniture production becoming a real industry, thus changing the history of design. Michael Thonet was formed in the Biedermeier period. This period in which the concept of comfort, ornamental simplification, and enhancement of wood as a material was born. Thonet will meet the tastes of a new and immense market: that of the petty and middle class, public establishments, and meeting places. Thonet moved with his entire family to Vienna, where he established the first factory in 1849 and enjoyed enormous success. Thonet's experiments even attracted the interest of Austrian Prince Klemens von Metternich, among others. Soon, the inventor of the chair was entrusted with the entire furnishing of the Liechtenstein Palace and the Schwarzenberg Palace. The production enjoys the acclaim of the Prince of Metternich and the Emperor himself is a success. Present at universal expositions, Thonet achieves the renown he needs to secure large-scale manufacture. In London in 1851 his production received a bronze medal and created an opportunity to forge valuable relationships for the possibility of export. Michael always used beech wood, the ideal wood because of its long fibers and high elasticity that could support bending, from the simplest to the most extreme. Thonet furniture began to appear in the pages of sales catalogs (including 25 models in 1859, 114 in 1884, and as many as 1,400 in 1915). Simple but elegant and refined, light but sturdy and solid, Thonet's furniture became true icons, eventually to be considered among the most famous pieces of furniture in the world. The benches are in original condition. Measurements width cm.58, depth cm.40, height cm.44, seat cm.44. For all our shipments we use special packing materials (custom-made wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.

  • Louis XVI Style French Bench with "Vienna Straw" Seat
    Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Interesting and graceful oak bench; the legs, conical and elegantly fluted, are joined at the base by a well-designed and harmonious X-shaped element; the well-solid frame is carved with simple, linear, and refined motifs; the upper oval part serves as the seat is enriched with fine "Vienna straw" work. The bench was made between 1880 and 1885 in an artisan workshop near Paris certainly by a very skilled master cabinetmaker because this kind of workmanship requires a lot of experience and skill. The process of seat construction using equidistant holes and a woven plant material (drawn guinea cane) was known since Egyptian times (a stool was found in the tomb of the architect Kha dating from 1600° B.C.), but it was from the mid-19th century that it became popular worldwide. It was the Austro-Hungarian cabinetmaker Michael Thonet (father of bentwood) who in 1842 created chair No. 4 with this technique for the Daum café on Vienna's Kohlmarkt, but success came in 1859 when the Gebruder Thonet company of Michael's sons presented chair No. 14 made of curved solid wood with a straw seat...

  • Paolo Buffa Style Italian Pair on Benches Brass Legs and Guild Fabric
    By Paolo Buffa
    Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest that you read the entire description, as with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to ensure the authenticity of our objects. Iconic and elegant pair of benches; the whole structure is solid, and the elegantly shaped legs are an integral and important part of the whole design and with their inclination make the benches very stable. In addition, the legs have a rare construction peculiarity: the core is made of wood and the outer covering is made of brass (see photo); the shaping of the entire form is very elegant and understated. The benches were created between 1960 and 1965 in the Brianza area (Lombardy, Italy), a historic location known for its designer furniture made with great craftsmanship. The artisans were inspired by the style of Paolo Buffa, with the desire to design two objects with small dimensions favoring the idea of comfort and coziness, and gave the benches a timeless originality, following the fashion of those years; we know for certain that the architect Buffa used Lombard craftsmen of recognized skill for the construction of his furniture, who used very refined materials also because the objects were intended mainly for the apartments of the rich Milanese bourgeoisie; our benches with their characteristics of quality, accuracy, and finish, were certainly made by those master craftsmen. Paolo Buffa (1903-1970) was an Italian architect and designer known for his mid-century furniture designs. More than a forerunner, he is a faithful spokesman for the taste of his time: neoclassical first and Novecentist later. Paolo Buffa was highly esteemed internationally for his refined design and rigorous execution, displaying expertise that was singularly Italian. Before his death in 1970 in Milan, Italy, Buffa had been named one of the country's leading designers. The structure has been left in its original condition, while we have upholstered the top with an iconic and sophisticated "cut velvet "with a unique pattern with a geometric cut by Designer Guild; the pattern is Quarenghi-Cocoa, one of the company's best fabrics. (see original Guild set photo). Color and classic reinvented and reinterpreted in a current key. Striking combinations, big flowers, elegant design. Fabrics and wallpapers with great decorative impact, color, and classic reinvented and reinterpreted in a current key. Striking combinations, big flowers, elegant design. Fabrics and wallpapers of great decorative impact, but also easy and always up-to-date solutions. This, and more, is the Designers Guild. • Biedermeier Style Danish Chair in Wood and Fabric
    Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Particular and elegant chair with a solid and functional structure; the most interesting part of the chair is the elaborate and imaginative backrest with a harmonious and refined design; in the middle, there is precious woodwork, carved with skill and ability by a master cabinetmaker; the front legs have been meticulously turned to give them a light and proportionate shape, while the rear ones have a slightly curved square section; the seat top is removable and a wooden pin on the front crossbar allows the top itself to fit perfectly into its natural housing. The seat upholstery was replaced in ancient times and is in good condition (a bit of wear on the front, see photo) so we did not consider doing any restoration on the whole chair because its authentic look and slight imperfections make it really seductive and fascinating and attest its antiquity. The chair was handcrafted in Denmark in perfect Biedermeier style using African...
