About the Item

This set of benches came from the home of Fons Vermeulen (1913-2013), a Bossche School architect. Perhaps the most daring architect within the Bossche School. Vermeulen often did things a little different, touching the borders of possibilities within the rules and conventions of the plastic number* Not only in furniture, but also in his designs of churches and other structures. From documentation about Vermeulen we learned that Dom Hans van der Laan appreciated his work and interpretation and expressed respect for Vermeulen. Fons Vermeulen once said about Van der Laan: '''I have experienced that his views on what is or is not possible in architecture are much broader than those of many colleagues in the Bossche School'' These benches are after the original design by Dom Hans van der Laan, but have a different colour and slightly different measurements than usual. The colour was most probably chosen in consultation with Wim van Hooff, the famous Bossche School colour expert and a close friend of Fons Vermeulen. The stools are in very good vintage condition with small signs of the time and a bit of difference in colour. The (also available) Bossche School table depicted on some of the pictures matches very well with this set. A more extensive provenance is available on request. *Dom Hans van der Laan (1904 – 1991) was a Dutch Benedictine monk and architect. He was a leading figure in the Bossche School. His theories on numerical ratios in architecture, in particular regarding the plastic number, were very influential. Van der Laan was not interested in the dimensions of the spaces themselves, but in what the proportions of dimensions brought about in humans

Modular Typ 505 lamp by Curt Fischer for Midgard, 1960s
By Curt Fischer, Midgard
Located in EVERDINGEN, NL
A TYP 505 wall mounted lamp, based on the iconic TYP 113. This modular lamp was produced with 3 different arm lengths, 3 types of (rotating) lampshades and a choice in type of joints. The lamp is in good condition, rewired and all parts working and rotating. The original lightswitch is also still present and working. Curt Fischer is well known for his innovative designs and still regarded as one of the greatest 20th-century inventors. At the time, just after WW1, recovering from the war, people worked long hours until late in the evening. The then-typical lamps would only cast light from the ceiling, causing the shadow of the worker’s body and head to cast shades over their projects. For an inventor like Curt Fischer, who had transformed horse-drawn coaches into mobile radio...
