Walnut Oak Butterfly Joinery Gallery Handmade Modern Minimal Bench

About the Item

With this bench, we wanted to push the limits of structure both in physics and aesthetics. The bench was sawn from a single long hand-selected board and carefully milled with a miter joint detail that cascades or 'waterfalls' a continuous grain from the seat down through the legs. This bench spans 6' without any central beam, which would typically carry such a load and further include a slight gap right down the center. To further accentuate this void of support, we used straight 'butterfly' joints whimsically placed to 'tie' the Bench together. This detail is a nod to our love and respect for George Nakashima's furniture. To further accentuate the bench's slender span, we chose a double miter cut on the edge profile that almost makes the Bench's thickness at first glance disappear. The subtle interplay of each of these aesthetic dynamics produces a unique piece celebrating historical reference as much as structural ingenuity. This item is available in custom sizes or finishes upon request. Due to natural materials used, the object received will be unique in material figuring and coloration. No Item assembly or installation is necessary. Care for the object is minimal and can be conditioned every 2 years to maintain the original finish. All of our pieces are originally designed and handmade in the Brooklyn, NY based Figure+Ground studio, we don't believe in the separation of design and fabrication. Each item is handcrafted, serialized, and shipped with a “Certificate of Authenticity”, documenting its place in history. Own an Original Figure+Ground Piece. #FIGUREGROUND.

  • Walnut and Corian Gallery Bench Mid-Century Modern inspired Minimal Handmade
By Le Corbusier, Maarten van Severen, George Nakashima, Figure Ground
    Located in Brooklyn, NY
This bench is composed of a Corian top floating on an elegantly detailed walnut frame. It is large enough for one's imagination or a group conversation. Spanning 7' long, it commands environments while subtly disappearing like its double miter joints that waterfall into the walnut grain. The bench is sawn from long hand-selected boards, carefully milled with a miter joint detail that cascades or 'waterfalls' a continuous grain from the seat down through the legs. To further accentuate the bench's slender span, we chose a double miter cut on the edge profile that almost makes the Bench's thickness at first glance disappear. The white-to-walnut bench refines the moment of repose. Its minimalism is as seductive as its touch to the senses. This bench is versatile and can just as easily define a vestibule or gallery window as it will sit aside a matching dining table. Finished in Tung oil it maintains a natural look and feel for the locally sourced black walnut. This item is available in custom sizes or finishes upon request. • Woven Walnut Bench, Mortise & Tenon Joinery
    Located in London, GB
The artfully designed Woven Bench combines form, function, and delicate craftsmanship. Its frame is made using mortise and tenon joinery, ensuring durability and longevity for years to come. The bench gets its name from its braided rope seating, providing comfort, support, and a mesmerizing pattern. Woven using a hard-wearing craft paper, it can take up to 200 kilos. Comfortably accommodating two people at once, this bench is an ideal addition to a sprawling dining table or as a rest stop within an entryway. Lightweight and with a handle on either side, the Woven Bench can easily be moved around if needed. Combining minimalism with rustic Asian design, this walnut bench is made all the more beautiful for its clean and simple lines. Optional linen seat padding is also available. Never limited by aesthetics, Zeng Qiang and his studio, 12H, are a testament to design evolution. With a young team of creatives, they test the limitations of design and craft. Whilst also paying homage to a craftsmanship style that heavily relies on ancient techniques. 12H does not cater to the trends and whims of furniture design; instead, they forge ahead with works that will stand the test of time. Their credo: A marriage of all things traditional with modern elements— making them truly unique. - FAS-grade American walnut...
