Louis XV Period Carved Beechwood Antique Canapé, 18th Century

About the Item

A remarkable piece that has remained in beautiful original condition despite two hundred and fifty years of use, this very fine canapé is of the Louis XV period circa the third quarter of the 18th century. The surface retains a fine early patina with evidence of an original ochre paint still visible in crevices, areas of low wear and the underside of the frame; this has mixed with wax, dirt and rubbed oxidizing to create a most magnificent glow throughout the carved frame. It shows a very skilled carver’s hand in the crest and apron treatments, both vivid displays of florals flanked by scrolling acanthus foliage along the curving molded frame. The carved embellishments of the feet, arm supports and each of the carved groups is highly developed and flows beautifully - note the particularly attractive scrolls of foliage that wrap around the toes of the front feet. The underside remains uncovered with simple joinery visible beneath: pegged tenon-mortise throughout the frame and a single fore-aft brace tenoned across. Any maker’s mark would have long since been lost from the multiple upholstery jobs, as the brand was generally impressed in the underside of the apron rail where extensive tacking makes the surface difficult to read. This is a very impressive piece for anyone passionate about fine period pieces - and it is remarkably comfortable too. It is an excellent acquisition for the classical home. Measurements: 65” W x 27 1/4” D x 40 1/8” H, 20 5/8” H to seat Condition report: Remnants of original ochre paint, surfaces heavily worn and distressed throughout with evidence of old inactive pest damage. Repairs to frame in a few places, all handled very competently and resulting in a very sturdy and strong frame: two old iron brackets affixed inside frame on underside. Upholstery is not old, the cushion with a few small stains - overall remaining in good usable condition. We have not removed the upholstery to examine covered portions.
