About the Item

Oak and foam "Grand Repos" canape by Guillerme and Chambon, 1950s This oak "Grand Repos" sofa deserves its title as an icon, both in terms of quality and design. This model visually represents the very reason why Votre Maison, the French duo's company, has significantly influenced the history of French design. Guillerme and Chambron are renowned for their high-quality solid oak furniture. The "Grand Repos" models are the most distinctive, thanks to their spindle-shaped backrests. With a solid wood frame, the backrest support consists of eleven symmetrically arranged wooden spindles extending upwards. The backrest is slightly inclined for added comfort, aided by the generous seat and back cushions. Creative overhanging spindles create a throne-like effect. The curve of the arms follows the lines of the back, curving gently outwards. "Grand Repos" means "great rest" in French, and with its elegant, well-thought-out design, this sofa is sure to provide just that. _____ Robert Guillerme graduated from the École Boulle in 1934, where he excelled in architecture and furniture design. After the Second World War, he moved to Lille in northern France, where he decorated houses and designed furniture for the highly reputed Atelier Rogier. In 1948, Guillerme was joined by his long-time friend, decorator Jacques Chambron, in Lille. The following year, Guillerme and Chambron met master cabinetmaker Émile Dariosecq, owner of a joinery workshop, and the company Votre Maison was born. Together, they defined and imposed a new furniture concept. Thanks to their creativity, originality and quality, Votre Maison's products quickly became a household name. Votre Maison has left its mark on French design history. Guillerme designed the furniture, while Chambron played the role of salesman, welcoming and advising customers. This dynamic duo was joined by Dariosecq, whose workshop took charge of manufacturing. Together, they have defined new furnishing concepts. Well-worked backs, polished wood and thick cushions are the hallmarks of their armchairs and sofas. Your House continued to produce furniture well into the 20th century, Jacques' son Hervé Chambron, a designer and graduate of the École Boulle, taking over in 1983.
