About the Item

Swedish, 18th century Neo-classical Gustavian set of dining chairs with drop-in seats, set of 10, origin: Sweden, circa 1790. The Gustavian, neoclassical period is characterized by a return to symmetry and straight lines, antique motifs such as laurels, medallions, and columns, replacing the curving, delicate and asymmetrical elements of the Rococo period. In Sweden, an aesthetic simplicity of everyday life took hold of the court and countryside. The neoclassical style desired characteristics were classical proportions, pared down silhouettes and often pale gray painted surfaces. This set of chairs are wonderful examples of Gustavian purity of design. In the 18th century, Sweden had moved toward the purer and stricter form of Neoclassicism, which was stimulated by Gustav III's journey to Rome and Paris in 1783-1784. Simplicity was fashionable. Dining chairs were generally inspired by English designs such as those of Hepplewhite or Sheraton; as seen in this set. However, they were usually painted grey just as are our chairs. The desire to capture light stems from the long, dark winters; often using light paint colors and reflective materials. The original objective of bringing “light” into people's homes during the long, dreary and dark Winter days still works in our homes today. Beautifully simple, elegant furniture combined with crystal + tin chandeliers and mirrored sconces lit by candles all come together to create a magical interior. All pieces have a purpose and no excess is evident; however, there is a warmth, which emanates from their aesthetic. More importantly though, Swedish antiques mix so well with pieces from all over the world spanning many centuries. There is a timelessness to all they created.
