Fashion brand Loewe has worked with global artisans to create a collection of wooden chairs decorated with woven materials, including foil, shearling and paper, that was shown as part of Milan Design Week 2023. With roots dating back to 1846 as a leathermaking collective, the Spanish luxury house of Loewe has fervently championed and preserved artisanal craftsmanship for over 175 years. Their esteemed presence at the Salone del Mobile is an annual tradition, with this year marking their 7th appearance. 18th-century ash and elm chair of unidentified provenance, adorned with handwoven raffia detailing. Highlighted at the Salone del Mobile 2023, this chair was a standout piece presented by Loewe. It's one of a curated collection of 30 masterfully crafted chairs, each embodying the precision of artisans who masterfully employ diverse hand-weaving techniques. Santiago Besteiro, a craftsman from the rural area of Leborei in Galicia, intricately adorned this chair with raffia details. In his namesake studio, Santiago experiments with the beauty and versatility of materials, such as leather, wood, and stone. He uses a modern approach producing pieces reminiscent of sculptures. The entire artistry for this particular piece took 38 dedicated hours. This chair is not just furniture; it's a reimagined work of art, breathing new life into classic design.
