Atang Tshikare, Mollo Oa Leifo (Mme), chair made in South Africa,

About the Item

Mollo Oa Leifo – Mme (“fire in the hearth – Mother”), pays homage to the African mothers who give knowledge. The Litema pattern on the frame, beadwork on the seat and weaving on the backrest of the chairs are all adornments of Bantu cultural symbols that were used in ancient times by our foremothers to record information, express feelings and exchange messages. This Afrofuturistic dining chair has a backrest made with handwoven grass from Lesotho and stained with a natural dye. The glass bead detail is woven along the seat, and fastened along a hand carved wooden frame. It has a symbol of fire in the middle to symbolize the hearth. The bronze Bantu pictograms detail is based on that symbolize cast and engraved into the wood whilst the beadwork is handsewn onto the fabric. This Louis VXI medallion chair is one of a set that is part of an Afrofuturist Period Room and currently in the permanent collection of the New York Metropolitan Museum.
