Atang Tshikare designed Soil Cabinet Sculpture with Wooden Legs

About the Item

Legae is a Tswana word for home. It is based on vernacular architecture using local customs, layering techniques that have passed on from generation to generation. The biomorphic shape exhibits the appearance or qualities of a living spaces in nature like weaver bird nests, anthills, swallows nests, and homesteads of the Basotho and Zulu people in South Africa. The piece is made with highly sanded wood and mildly textured soil. Legae is made with juxtaposing textures to evoke touching. It is a storage space of small objects. The piece is made to be seen from all directions hence the entry ways to the piece are positioned in three different directions and at three varied heights. This design thinking accommodates the use for a wide ranging audience .

  • Atang Tshikare, Mollo Oa Leifo (Mme), chair made in South Africa,
    By Atang Tshikare
    Located in Cape Town, WC
Mollo Oa Leifo – Mme (“fire in the hearth – Mother”), pays homage to the African mothers who give knowledge. The Litema pattern on the frame, beadwork on the seat and weaving on the backrest of the chairs are all adornments of Bantu cultural symbols that were used in ancient times by our foremothers to record information, express feelings and exchange messages. This Afrofuturistic dining chair has a backrest made with handwoven grass from Lesotho and stained with a natural dye. The glass bead detail is woven along the seat, and fastened along a hand carved wooden frame. It has a symbol of fire in the middle to symbolize the hearth. The bronze Bantu pictograms detail is based on that symbolize cast and engraved into the wood whilst the beadwork is handsewn onto the fabric. This Louis VXI medallion chair is one of a set that is part of an Afrofuturist Period Room...

The cabinet consists of a weightless array of bubbles of different dimensions filling the space between the two functional cubes with relief facades. The luxurious composition is completed with elegant brass legs. The LED lighting emphasizes the volume and texture of the bubbles. It accentuates the perception of the lightweight shapes of the bubbles and adds intimacy to the interior in the nighttime. For all people who see this cabinet, the question arises of how exactly these balls are connected. It is this mass of bubbles that create a feeling of weightlessness, lightness, flight, elusiveness and play. That is why the dimensions of the balls are different and change with each new product.
