Chairs from the Brass Collection are the second series of objects developed with Endless Forms, Zhoujie’s own digitalized fabrication system that generates an ever-changing family of objects. With a role as more of creator rather than designer, Zhoujie’s designs appear as though viewing the world through a kaleidoscope, looking at the infinite possibilities. Bras is a relatively soft material, it is quite easy to distort and scratch due to the touch during the transportation, laser-cutting and fabrication process. Therefore, every single fabrication process has to be done with extreme caution. A new material means new attempt from structure, every step and the whole procedure needs innumerable tests. With his practice dedicated to the development of a digitalized fabrication system, Zhoujie’s goal has been to create a system with an ability to transform digital programs into real objects. In the near future, people will be able to participate in the creation; design a customized chair through the digital system and select different materials of their choice. This brand new, artificial intelligence design concept will fit better into the life and preferences of each individual, and, the interaction between product and human will be deepened.

Zhang Zhoujie
Zhang Zhoujie credits the creative possibilities of the computer with the acclaimed designs of his ultra-modern metal furniture. Chairs, side tables and decorative pieces are made with digital design technology and production methods like 3D printing.
Born in Ningbo, China, Zhang earned a degree in industrial design from the China Academy of Art before moving to London for a Master of Arts in industrial design from Central Saint Martins. After his studies, Zhang returned to China and founded his design studio, Zhang Zhoujie Digital Lab, in Shanghai in 2010. There he pioneered a new method of digital production.
Zhang begins with software algorithms. “The computer is the author,” he explained to Surface magazine. “I am the curator.” After selecting a design from the computer’s output, he cuts, welds and polishes metal for the piece. Through this approach, each item is unique.
The first significant result of this process was the Triangulation Chair. Released in 2014, the futuristic design garnered attention for its endless variations. Zhang exhibited the chair at Design Shanghai 2018, where 100 versions were installed in a courtyard. Gallery ALL cofounder Yu Wang told Introspective magazine why the display was so momentous: “Nobody had seen this much digitally created design in one place before.”
Zhang has participated in exhibitions worldwide, including 100% Design in London. Fast Company named him one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business in China in 2014 and he was included on the 2021 Forbes China's Most Valuable Smart Designer list.

Since graduating with an industrial design degree from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, Zhipeng Tan has focused on the ancient technique of lost-wax casting. Through this foundry process, rich in heritage and tradition, Tan explores his interest in organic forms. Often inspired by his environmental surroundings, such as water and plants, he explores anthropomorphic themes, as well. Though trained as an industrial designer, he has become an accomplished self-taught sculptor, eagerly exploring the elastic and permeable boundaries between art and design and finding a harmonious fusion of sculpture and furniture, provocative objects of both beauty and utility.
Though from his early work, one may sense the influence of Joan Miró, Henry Moore and Constantin Brancusi, and in his more recent pieces there is a nod to the Post-Pop sensibilities of Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami, the work of Zhipeng Tan is thoroughly original, an expression of his exuberance and imagination.
