About the Item

Chair #3 is a contemporary masterpiece that draws from a rich lineage of iconic chairs, blending historical influences with modern craftsmanship. Its cantilevered form is inspired by the Sitzgeiststuhl, designed by the Rasch Brothers in 1927 during the early Bauhaus period. This Z-shaped chair, akin to Marcel Breuer’s cantilever designs, captures the era’s fascination with structural experimentation and minimalism. Moving forward in time, the chair incorporates the geometric simplicity of Gerrit Rietveld’s 1934 Zigzag chair, a hallmark of the De Stijl movement, which emphasized radical simplicity and functional beauty. The design also references Karl Nothhelfer’s 1955 Kufenstuhl, a German school chair, with its bold two-legged structure. This element further strengthens the chair's connection to modernist principles while ensuring stability and strength. Finally, Chair #3 draws upon the work of George Nakashima, specifically his 1988 Conoid chair. Nakashima’s blend of Shaker influences and organic modernism is reflected in the chair’s sculptural quality, with the T-shaped legs echoing the design language of 19th-century Shaker furniture. Handcrafted from solid black walnut, Chair #3 features a seat reinforced by a unique sliding dovetail joint, a detail created by the designer to enhance its adaptability and maintain structural integrity. Finished with a sleek oil treatment, this chair stands as both a functional and bold statement piece. Perfect as a dining chair, auxiliary seating, or an accent piece in any modern space, its traditional joinery and contemporary design make it a lasting addition to your home or office.

With its fusion of design history and modern craftsmanship, this chair makes a bold, sophisticated statement in any space. Chair #3: Tracing the Origins of a Contemporary Classic Chair #3 is the product of an in-depth exploration of a sequence of iconic chairs—Conoid, Kufenstuhl, Zigzag, and Sitzgeiststuhl—all recognized as contemporary design classics. However, its true uniqueness is revealed not in the first glance, but through the intricate details and historical influences embedded in its form. The sequence begins with the Conoid chair, designed by George Nakashima in 1988. Nakashima, who referred to his work as "Shaker Japanese," drew inspiration from 19th-century Shaker furniture. Key elements such as the molded seating, T-shaped legs—commonly found in Shaker tables—and spindles in the back, echo the Shaker aesthetic, while also paying homage to the Windsor chair from the 16th century. However, the Conoid’s distinctive two-legged design references Karl Nothhelfer’s Kufenstuhl, a 1955 German school chair...
