About the Item
How can design break the limitations of culture, the subjective experiences of the designer and the reactions of different people, to be as diverse as nature? How will artificial intelligence change our lives in future? Not only will voice controlled services be fundamental, AI will also help create objects for everyday life. This chair is part of a pioneering project to incorporate AI into the design process. Through numerous experiments and practice with different products and art forms, Zhang Zhoujie Digital Lab strives toward the goal of enabling the creativity of the computer to participate in the daily lives of people. The chair is an example of the infinite possibilities of these computer-generated designs.
For more than eight years the Zhang Zhoujie has been exploring how the computer can map the real world and how to create different kinds of chairs based on individual human interactions. This led him to develop his hardware sensor chair, which can collect data when people sit on it. He also developed software to use those data points to generate chairs in various forms that
fit an individual’s body with a unique design. Each chair is thus the result of collaboration between people and computers.
According to Zhang Zhoujie, “Human emotions, instincts, and needs are complementary to artificial intelligence.”
At first glance, one could imagine these chairs come from another world, full of futuristic perspectives and surprising angles. Though each is unique, as if a freely grown object, all are constructed of the same material and structural logic to create a unified whole.
Zhang graduated from Central Saint Martins Art & Design College in London, and is a member of the Architectural Association School of Architecture. Since establishing Zhoujie Zhang Digital Lab in 2010, he has been a pioneer in the realm of digital creativity. His work is known for being independent, experimental and futuristic. Zhang believes that objects in the digital world can grow and morph much like things found in nature, and he is dedicated to discovering and exploring the methods within these transformations. His work focuses on logic, variety and unpredictability, which is based on his understanding of nature.

Zhang Zhoujie
Zhang Zhoujie credits the creative possibilities of the computer with the acclaimed designs of his ultra-modern metal furniture. Chairs, side tables and decorative pieces are made with digital design technology and production methods like 3D printing.
Born in Ningbo, China, Zhang earned a degree in industrial design from the China Academy of Art before moving to London for a Master of Arts in industrial design from Central Saint Martins. After his studies, Zhang returned to China and founded his design studio, Zhang Zhoujie Digital Lab, in Shanghai in 2010. There he pioneered a new method of digital production.
Zhang begins with software algorithms. “The computer is the author,” he explained to Surface magazine. “I am the curator.” After selecting a design from the computer’s output, he cuts, welds and polishes metal for the piece. Through this approach, each item is unique.
The first significant result of this process was the Triangulation Chair. Released in 2014, the futuristic design garnered attention for its endless variations. Zhang exhibited the chair at Design Shanghai 2018, where 100 versions were installed in a courtyard. Gallery ALL cofounder Yu Wang told Introspective magazine why the display was so momentous: “Nobody had seen this much digitally created design in one place before.”
Zhang has participated in exhibitions worldwide, including 100% Design in London. Fast Company named him one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business in China in 2014 and he was included on the 2021 Forbes China's Most Valuable Smart Designer list.
