Mid-19th Century French Hand-Carved Walnut Prie Dieu or Prayer Chair
About the Item
This mid nineteenth century French hand-carved walnut prayer chair, or prie-dieu in French, features an intricately hand-carved cross with a central sunburst flanked by drapery and acanthus leaves on each side. A symmetrical shell motif can be found above and below the cross. The chair is additionally detailed with hand painted gold accents. Originally from the Saint Benoit abbey near Poitiers, France, this prie-dieu served as a kneeling bench with an upper armrest to rest one's elbows when in prayer. Beautifully carved and upholstered in mohair, this prayer chair is a fine addition to a collection of religious objects, circa 1860.
