About the Item
One Note Samba Chair – Tracing the Origins of a Contemporary Classic
The "One Note Samba Chair" is a reflection of both the limitations and the possibilities of local Galician chestnut wood, a material traditionally used for furniture making. In a way, it echoes the creative process of an artist or writer with limited resources—like a painter with only two pigments or a writer with only two words. Inspired by the song "One Note Samba" by Antônio Carlos Jobim, where a single note develops into a melody rich in emotion and complexity, this chair is born from the limitations of chestnut wood and developed through an artisan process that mirrors the spirit of Jobim’s composition.
The chair is a result of a deeper exploration into the origins of iconic contemporary chairs. It traces the evolution from the Conoid chair by George Nakashima (1988), which draws from Shaker furniture traditions, through the Kufenstuhl (1955) by Karl Nothhelfer, and the Zigzag chair (1934) by Gerrit Rietveld, to the Z Rasch (1927) by the Rasch Brothers, each contributing to the development of a unique sequence of modern design. This journey reflects a celebration of “uniqueness,” not just in what is immediately visible, but in the intricate complexity found within a single form.
The Conoid chair, influenced by Shaker designs, features molded seating, T-shaped legs, and spindles, which also appear in Windsor chairs. The Kufenstuhl contributes to the development of Nakashima’s two-legged architecture. The Zigzag chair, an iconic piece from the Bauhaus era, introduces a new layer of architectural “engineering,” building on the work of the Rasch Brothers, whose chair is rooted in the bent steel tube designs of the early 20th century, notably influenced by Marcel Breuer’s work.
The "One Note Samba Chair" embraces these historical references while pushing the boundaries of local materials. Made from Galician chestnut, the chair celebrates a minimalist yet sophisticated design that combines tradition with modern innovation, offering a timeless addition to any space.

frank buschmann
Frank Buschmann (1969-Pinetown, South Africa), artist / craftsman /designer .
Trained as a industrial designer and cabinetmaker. Of German origin, currently living in Galicia, Spain. He spent his childhood in South Africa and Nigeria, his adolescence and education in Germany, where he studied cabinetmaking at the Karlsruhe School of Crafts. In the Netherlands he studied Industrial Design at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, where he has been later teaching in the Master "man and humanity". Frank argues that the mastery of a trade is a carrier of tools exemplary for the sustainability of the future. Being a master of a trade is not reduced to the virtuosity of handling some techniques but also supposes a long learning to recognize and cultivate specific attitudes and values. With this approach, Frank intends to recover and maintain the knowledge and practice, not only of the traditional techniques and processes of cabinetmaking, but also its values: patience, intuition and the search for perfection. The virtuous management of techniques goes through the learning of values and attitudes and, all of them, he considers, are universal tools needed to deal with the complexity of the future.

Chair #3: Tracing the Origins of a Contemporary Classic
Chair #3 is the product of an in-depth exploration of a sequence of iconic chairs—Conoid, Kufenstuhl, Zigzag, and Sitzgeiststuhl—all recognized as contemporary design classics. However, its true uniqueness is revealed not in the first glance, but through the intricate details and historical influences embedded in its form.
The sequence begins with the Conoid chair, designed by George Nakashima in 1988. Nakashima, who referred to his work as "Shaker Japanese," drew inspiration from 19th-century Shaker furniture. Key elements such as the molded seating, T-shaped legs—commonly found in Shaker tables—and spindles in the back, echo the Shaker aesthetic, while also paying homage to the Windsor chair from the 16th century. However, the Conoid’s distinctive two-legged design references Karl Nothhelfer’s Kufenstuhl, a 1955 German school chair...
