Antique Queen Anne Period Side Chair Fruitwood English Circa 1710

About the Item

This is a classic English Queen Anne period chair with a beautiful high curved back, high cabriole legs, carved detail and a lovely patination, dating to circa 1700-1720. This is a very good example of this classic antique chair design with great character. It is all hand carved with a jointed and pegged construction. City made English chairs of this period are normally made of Walnut. This chair is made of a mix of hardwoods including fruitwood and elm and would have been made in a rural area, a so called "country" example. The design and shape of this chair is excellent and it has many quality design features; 1) Shaped top rail with carved detail 2) Thin rather than wide central vase splat, made of Elm with a lovely curve. 3) Rounded side rails, with a distinctive curve from a side view, all the way down to the feet. 4) High cabriole legs with carved ear pieces and scroll saddle side carving to the top of the legs which is a very nice feature. Pad feet at the front as per normal. 5) Vertically thin seat top rail which is correct for the period as they became thicker later into the 18th century. 6) Curved and shaped cross stretcher. 7) Age wear in the correct places for a chair over 300 years old. e.g. correct wear on the base of the feet, back and front The chair has a drop in seat with rounded front corners and a reupholstered woven rust-red cover. This could easily be re-upholstered using a fabric of choice if required. The proportions of this chair are particularly good with good thick timber used for the legs. The timber has developed a lovely deep patina through hundreds of years of use and polishing.

  • Mid Victorian Side Chair Finely Hand Carved with Wool Work Seat, Circa 1850
    Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a very good quality example of an English occasional side chair in the Rococo style, from the mid Victorian period, circa 1850, made from Beech. The back is a Classic balloon back shape, but with intricate cut-out and carved detail to the frame and particularly to the cross splat. This carved detail is continued on the front legs and front stretcher. The foot of the legs are splayed slightly outwards which adds to the features of this chair. Twin side stretchers give additional strength to this chair but overall this is a delicately made chair. It has a good wool-work covered seat with a rose spray design. Please note: This chair is not a strong dining room chair and is not recommended for regular use as a chair to sit on. The chair is light and would make a very pretty bedroom or hall side chair, to be used principally for display either on its own or with say teddy bears displayed on it, or for draping light...

This is a superb hardwood walnut or mahogany, Chippendale back, side or dining chair which we date to the mid 18th century, George 111rd period, circa 1760. The chair has a very well carved "Chippendale" back splat consisting of vertical interconnected ribbons with good detail. The top rail has a serpentine crest with central crisply carved detail with an acorn motif and well formed & carved ears with rosettes. The pegged and jointed legs are square with an inside chamfer back and front and the front legs are flute molded to match the side rails, with dovetailed "H" cross-stretchers. It has a drop-in seat which has been newly upholstered and webbed but could easily be upholstered in a fabric of choice. The proportion of this chair is excellent with very good width and a good rake to the backs and rear legs. The hardwood has developed a beautiful mellow colour and patina with age and polishing over the years. Overall a fine quality, English Georgian dining chair.
