About the Maker

I spent my early years in the flat open landscape of East Yorkshire’s coastal area with its sparse horizontal lines of dykes and wind blasted trees, textured landscape and big expanses of sky. These early years coupled with a love of drawing and painting left me with an appreciation of subtle forms. After Art college I worked as an artist/illustrator for fifteen years before rediscovering my love of three dimensional forms and beginning to design and make furniture. The same obsessions, of simple line, shape, texture and colour, still dominate. This year I had the honour of receiving a Bespoke Guild Mark Award from The Furniture Maker’s Company for a rippled ash chair. When designing and making a piece of furniture my aim is to translate the wood’s natural beauty into each piece. This to me is very important: to go with the quiet presence and tactile quality of the wood, to select the most appropriate pieces of timber and to make furniture that is both restful on the eye and pleasurable to look at and to touch. All of my furniture is made by hand. No two pieces are the same. Each piece is initialed with JF and a consecutive making number.
