About the Item

Pierre Chapo 1927-1987. French furniture designer and craftsman. Pierre Chapo studied architecture at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, graduating in 1958. He then travelled in Scandinavia and the USA with his wife Nicole Lormier, a sculptor and painter. On this trip, they visited the house and office of the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who greatly influenced Pierre Chapo 1927-1987. French furniture designer and craftsman. Pierre Chapo studied architecture at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, graduating in 1958. He then travelled in Scandinavia and the USA with his wife Nicole Lormier, a sculptor and painter. On this trip, they visited the house and office of the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who greatly influenced Csapo's later designs and work. On his return, Chapo set up his own studio in Clamart, France, where he began to work with the support of his wife Nicole. Chapo and Nicole opened Gallery Chapo on rue d'Opital, a tree-lined street in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. The gallery exhibited and sold his own work as well as that of other artisans and artists. Among others, Chapo shared the design philosophy of the artist Isamu Noguchi, whose organic approach to art and crafts was not bound by the industrial concept of design that prevailed under the influence of post-war socialism at the time.
