About the Item
Pierre Chapo 1927-1987.
French furniture designer and craftsman. Pierre Chapo studied architecture at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, graduating in 1958. He then travelled in Scandinavia and the USA with his wife Nicole Lormier, a sculptor and painter. On this trip, they visited the house and office of the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who greatly influenced Pierre Chapo 1927-1987.

Chapo and Nicole opened Gallery Chapo on rue d'Opital, a tree-lined street in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. The gallery exhibited and sold his own work as well as that of other artisans and artists. Among others, Chapo shared the design philosophy of the artist Isamu Noguchi, whose organic approach to art and crafts was not bound by the industrial concept of design that prevailed under the influence of post-war socialism at the time. Pierre Chapo
Pierre Chapo, who was born in Paris, France, in July 1927, was initially interested in becoming a professional painter. However, after a chance meeting with a shipbuilder who introduced him to wood and woodworking, Chapo changed his focus and decided to study architectural studies at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
After graduating, Chapo and his wife, the sculptor and painter Nicole Lormier, started traveling extensively through Scandinavia and Central America. Among the many places the couple visited was Taliesin West, the home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright — a visit that had a lasting influence on Chapo’s future work and designs.
