Set 4 Antique 19thC High-backed English Ash Elm Country Windsor Arm Chairs 1840
About the Item
A very nice set of 4 antique English country high-backed ash & elm Windsor armchairs, circa 1840.
This harlequin set of four Windsor chairs are from the Buckinghamshire area, the hoop back, spindles a legs and stretchers are made from ash and the seats are made from elm.
There was a great tradition from the 18th century onwards of making such chairs in the High Wycombe area of Buckinghamshire, such chair parts; hoop backs, stretchers and spindles were turned with pole lathes in the forest with green timber as it would easily be bent into shape without the need for steaming. The name for these rustic artisans was a "Bodger", who would make these parts and then take them to a manufactory where these parts would be assembled to a seat, these itinerant chairmakers are now relegated to the history books.
This very nice set of four associated Windsor armchairs are tight and stable, with a warm mellow patina and are ready to grace your home. We also have a number of other such Windsor chairs if you require a larger set?
