About the Item
Set of 10 vintage "Chlacc" or "S45" solid elm dining chairs by Pierre Chapo made in France ca. 1978.
"Chlacc" is the name of the patented manufacturing process for this type of furniture.
The S45 is composed of numerous small wood sections joined and glued to each other. This process enabled Chapo to design a fine, lightweight structure with slender lines. The S45 chair is technically and conceptually difficult to make. The user's weight rests mainly on the crossed "Chlacc" feet and the solidity of the back is ensured by being secured to the two back legs, which stand at an angle of 45°. Eleven assembly points join up the seven sections of the chair. The S45 is one of the most sculptural creations in the Chapo catalog, a design that bears not a passing resemblance to the iconic tower in the capital where its creator was born.

Pierre Chapo
Pierre Chapo, who was born in Paris, France, in July 1927, was initially interested in becoming a professional painter. However, after a chance meeting with a shipbuilder who introduced him to wood and woodworking, Chapo changed his focus and decided to study architectural studies at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
After graduating, Chapo and his wife, the sculptor and painter Nicole Lormier, started traveling extensively through Scandinavia and Central America. Among the many places the couple visited was Taliesin West, the home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright — a visit that had a lasting influence on Chapo’s future work and designs.
