About the Item

Set of four bentwood chairs with cane seats, produced by J&J Kohn in Austria in the early 20th century. This is model number 36, as can be seen in reproductions from the 1904 catalogue. The chairs are in good condition for their age, with a very slight defect on the cane seat of one of them, but this does not affect its stability or use. Some of the bent wood has aged, which is normal for their age, but all four chairs are stable and perfectly usable on a daily basis. The Kohn factory produced models similar to those of Thonet. It was founded in 1850 and the first factory was established in 1867. Factories were set up in Austria and Russia with shops throughout Europe, particularly in France. At that time, there were 6,500 workers in the various factories and 5,500 pieces of furniture were produced every day! The principle of bentwood is to soften the beech wood with heat and moisture and then shape it using moulds and powerful machines. Chairs, for example, could be shipped in pieces and assembled once they arrived at the store, which meant they took up much less space during transport. Now you can bring a piece of history into your home with these chairs that are over a century old!

Vintage Danish Glass Vase by Per Lutken for Holmegaard in 1960s
By Per Lutken for Holmegaard
Located in SAINT-YRIEIX-SUR-CHARENTE, FR
Glass vase (H:25cm), design by Per Lutken (1916-1998), published by the famous Danish glassworks Holmegaard. The bluish tone, the thickness of the glass visible at the top is an integral part of the design of this vase, dated and signed underneath. Per Lutken was a famous Danish glassmaker who joined Holmegaard in 1942 and worked there until his death. He contributed to the revival of the glass industry, which was running out of steam at the time, by bringing his pure and timeless style, which has become a classic of Scandinavian design and can be found in many Danish and Swedish homes. He was very productive and for decades created numerous models that made the glassware industry successful in Denmark and around the world. The Holmegaard factory was founded in 1823 in Næstved, southwest of Copenhagen, and started its activity by manufacturing green and brown bottles, and later turned to art glass. Count Christian Conrad Danneskiold-Samsøe bought the Holmegaard estate and realised that the local peat could be used as fuel. He asked the Danish king...
