Set of Six Dutch Louis XVI Chairs and Two Armchairs

About the Item

Comprising a pair of open armchairs and six side chairs, each with channelled curved oval back and bow-fronted seat, the toprail centred by a ribbon-tie, the arms with Greek key terminals and curved supports, the seat-rail carved with bead-and-reed, on ring-turned fluted legs, terminating in bun feet, restorations This set of chairs was supplied to the Zaltbommel merchant Willem Cornelis de Virieu (1762-1852), probably on the occasion of his marriage to Cornelia Maria de Jonge (1766-1789) in 1788. Originally, the set inlcuded 20 chairs and four fauteuils and were covered in crimson velvet decorated with a neo-classical pattern of vases and floral-garlands against trellis ground. The set was still complete in 1833, when an inventory was made of the belongings of de Virieu after the death of his second wife, Anna Maria de Ruuk (1766-1833). At that date, they are listed in the "Zaal" of Oude Gracht 47 in Utrecht, and were valued at f. 110,-. The set was inherited by his only son from his first marriage, Francois Willem de Virieu (1789-1876), and are depicted on a painting of an interior in his house on the Gamerstraat in Zaltbommel, which was executed circa 1852. This picture, which is unsigned, shows Francois de Virieu, seated on the far right with his three daughters and their spouces. The family is seated on fauteuils form the present set. Distinctly visible are the downswept arms, oval backs and crimson velvet upholstery. The chairs were inhereted by Maria Anna Davina (1820-1894) and her husband Francois Andre des Tombes (1816-1879), and were subsequently passed down in the female line until they were aquired by the present owner.
