Surrealist Postmodern Foot-Shaped Lounge Chair, Netherlands, circa 1990 Playful, provocative, and utterly unforgettable, this sculptural lounge chair shaped like a giant human foot is a standout example of late 20th-century postmodern design. Crafted in the Netherlands around 1990, the chair defies traditional form by merging functional comfort with surrealist wit. Upholstered in smooth orange-cognac leather, its voluptuous curves and five-toe front mimic the anatomy of a reclining foot—while silver-painted, anatomically realistic foot-shaped front legs complete the anthropomorphic illusion. While the designer and manufacturer remain unknown, the chair is widely attributed to a private artist’s commission and was previously part of a notable Rotterdam art collection. Its tongue-in-cheek style draws clear inspiration from surrealist pioneers like Salvador Dalí, and contemporary design icons such as Gaetano Pesce and Nicola L., who famously turned body parts into collectible furniture.
