This is a beautiful and rare "Klini" ('couch') designed by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Saridis of Athens. In 1960 T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings re-created 22 models representing iconic Greek furniture from the 6th to the 4th centuries B.C. His work was put on exhibit in Athens in 1961, gaining worldwide recognition for its style and craftsmanship. Made of walnut, the back rest, the leather laced seat, and the legs resemble the Klismo chairs. This piece is in wonderful condition. The leather is still intact and one can tell upon inspection that previous owners have taken good care of it resulting in minimal wear over the years. Elevate your space with a rare and striking T.H. The modern chaise longue was first popularised during the 16th century in France. They were created by French furniture craftsmen for the rich to rest without the need to retire to the bedroom. It was during the Rococo period that the chaise longue became the symbol of social status and only the rarest and most expensive materials were used in their construction. Today, the chaise longue is seen as a luxury item for the modern home. They are often used to complement a home's décor such as living or reading rooms, or as a stylish boudoir chair for bedroom seating.
Duchesse brisée (Broken duchess in French): this word is used when the chaise longue is divided in two parts: the chair and a long footstool, or two chairs with a stool in between them. The origin of the name is unknown.
Récamier: a récamier has two raised ends, and nothing on the long sides. It is sometimes associated with French Empire (neo-classical) style. It is named after French society hostess Madame Récamier (1777–1849), who posed elegantly on a couch of this kind for a portrait, painted in 1800 by Jacques-Louis David. This iconic and authentic (both the leather cushion and the Mahogany frame is signed with Knoll International labels) daybed is the 'Barcelona Daybed' also referred to as the 'Barcelona Couch' by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for Knoll International and is considered an 'early original production collectors example' as it is from Knoll's earlier years of producing this design in the 1960s and 1970s before they changed to different manufacturing processes during the 1980s.
This example is signed with a Knoll International label that has the 320 Park Ave address and is dated on the back of the label July 9, 1975. To determine the estimated production year we note that the date most likely corresponds to the retailer or possibly the Knoll sold/ ship date. The address of 320 Park Ave changed to Fifth Ave in 1970 and Knoll Associates did not become Knoll International until 1968. Therefore we would pinpoint the production year to be between 1968 and 1970. It is possible that it was slightly after 1970 that this example was produced as it is believed that Knoll continued to use labels with the older 320 Park Ave for several months to a couple years after changing addresses, however generally speaking 1970s examples will be labelled with their Fifth Ave address. All construction details also indicate a 1st-Generation 'original' production by Knoll as their production did not change throughout the Knoll Associates years and through the first half of the Knoll International years.
This rare original 1st-Generation 'Barcelona Daybed' features its original brown leather upholstery with subtle patina and wear throughout. These traces of age and use bring more vibrancy to the leather, giving this piece an on-trend lightly distressed look. The original bolster pillow in matching brown leather is secured to the cushion and platform via straps and lock snaps. The platform is crafted from stained Mahogany and supported by polished tubular stainless steel legs and the original leather straps are all in-tact. Both the cushion is labelled and the platform frame as well with a partial Knoll International sticker label as can be seen in the photo gallery.
Considered to be the epitome of modern design, Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich originally designed the Barcelona chair in 1929 to serve as seating for the king and queen of Spain in the German Pavilion. This was Germany's entry for the International Exhibition, hosted by Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Designed in 1930 the Barcelona daybed (also referred to as the Barcelona Couch) emanates this seminal design, paralleling the same simplicity and elegance of the iconic Barcelona chair.

Almost certainly acquired by Rev. Daniel Shipton, during the remodelling of Crawley House, circa 1806 and by descent to his daughter Charlotte Orlebar, (nee Shipton) and by descent through the Orlebar Family, Crawley House, Husborne Crawley, Bedfordshire.
Crawley House was built for Rev. Daniel Shipton in 1777 with a legacy from his wife Temperance’s family: Daniel and Temperence’s daughter and heir Charlotte married Robert Charles Orlebar in 1807 and thus the estate came into the possession of the Orlebar family. It was reworked in 1806, when the drawing room was decorated (and presumably furnished) in the Egyptian style, including the upper part of the walls divided into panel with a border of sphinxes and mummies, a scheme recorded in the surviving account book.
Surviving accounts detailing Rev. Shipton’s expenditure on the 1806 renovations and extensions at Crawley house deposited with the Bedfordshire and Luton Archives and Records Service, provide great detail about internal furnishings through each room in the new part of the house in turn: Library; yellow bedroom; blue room; green bedroom; dining parlour and drawing room. Many payments were made to fashionable London firms including to Wedgewood, to Parker the famous glass manufacturer, £119.2s 11ds, to Shout for Statuary, and notably, the very large sum of £915.0s. 11d to Collier the upholsterer, considering the house cost in the region of £1,000 when it was built in 1777-8, one can only presume that Collier supplied all the furniture from as-yet-unknown London...

A beautiful antique metal campaign chaise lounge from France. The chaise can be positioned into three different positions - as a chair, a traditional chaise, and a flat daybed. We custom made three cushions from our gorgeous ivory cowhide. Each cushion is generously stuffed with down feathers and a little synthetic to hold the shape. The chaise longue is an upholstered piece of furniture that was made popular in France in the early 16th century. This low reclining seat — a “long chair” in English — boasts an elongated form and low back that extends about half the length of the furnishing, affording the welcome opportunity for a sitter to put their feet up and relax. (In the United States, the term is frequently spelled “chaise lounge.”) So, how do you pronounce chaise longue? It sounds like “shayz lawng,” but limiting it to shayz is perfectly acceptable in the States.
