About the Item
En 1959, Pierre Chapo dessine un lit pour pour l’écrivain Samuel Beckett qui lui passe une commande spéciale. Le créateur s’amuse à appeler le lit « Godot », en clin d’œil à la pièce « En attendant Godot ». Le L 01 devient la nomenclature Chapo et peut être considéré comme le point de départ de la première collection Chapo, présentée officiellement au début de l’année 1963. Le lit L 01 marque les esprits par la sobriété de ses lignes simples et tendues, sa tête de lit amovible, et l’assemblage en peigne aux angles de son cadre, seul élément de décor, qui sera souvent imité par la suite. Le meuble peut être utilisé en espace de couchage, en version banquette ou en lit de repos.

Pierre Chapo
Pierre Chapo, who was born in Paris, France, in July 1927, was initially interested in becoming a professional painter. However, after a chance meeting with a shipbuilder who introduced him to wood and woodworking, Chapo changed his focus and decided to study architectural studies at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
After graduating, Chapo and his wife, the sculptor and painter Nicole Lormier, started traveling extensively through Scandinavia and Central America. Among the many places the couple visited was Taliesin West, the home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright — a visit that had a lasting influence on Chapo’s future work and designs.
