Late 18th Century French Directoire Period Hand Carved Walnut Daybed

About the Item

This French Directoire period walnut daybed from the late eighteenth century features hand carved rosettes on the die joints. Each end is crowned with a double faced pediment detailed with a hand carved central urn on each side. The mattress and cushions were all newly upholstered in white linen in France and include two bolsters and two removable back cushions. This hand carved walnut daybed dates to a very short time period in French furniture. The Directoire style spanned a ten year period from 1790 to 1800. It was representative of revolutionary France attempting to establish legitimacy after the demise of the monarchy and the end of Louis XVI reign. Typically seen in this style are classic motifs such as the pediments in this daybed that harken to Greek and Roman art and architecture. A rare find in French furniture, this versatile piece may serve as seating in a living space or as a piece to be quietly enjoyed in a bedroom. c. 1790-1800.
