Late 18th Century Italian Hand Carved Oak Chest of Drawers

About the Item

This late eighteenth century Italian oak commode or chest of drawers features hand pegged paneled sides and drawer fronts with hand carvings of garlands and cornucopia. Its three drawers are each appointed with their original bronze drawer pulls detailed with garlands of flowers, sheaves of wheat, knotted ribbon and the profiles of nobles. At the center of each drawer is a classic Louis XVI inspired knotted ribbon escutcheon. Above the three lower drawers are two additional smaller drawers also fitted with bronze knotted ribbon escutcheons. The drawers are flanked by fluting, and rosettes adorn the die joints. The lower apron features cabled fluting, and the piece rests on squared fluted legs. c. 1780.

    Wear consistent with age and use. Repair made to the bottom drawer. Two smaller upper drawers do not lock. Locks function on three lower drawers.
