14 Leather Chairs From Princess Daiana's Family Home Spencer House Painted Room

About the Item

Wimbledon-Furniture is delighted to offer for sale this sublime suite of fourteen fully restored circa 1920 Art Deco walnut and brown leather carver armchairs from Princess Diana Spencer’s London family home Spencer House, the chairs are from The Painted Room Naturally this is a once in a lifetime chance to purchase this suite of chairs, they will never come up for sale again, the Spencer family no longer sell their family heirlooms. The sale includes one original picture of the chairs in situs at the Spencer house in The Painted Room, I sent this picture to the House opening manager at Althorp and she kindly confirmed via the Curator that it is the Painted room in the Spencer house London which was redecorated around 10 years ago, I have included a picture of how it looks today. The sale also includes a hand written letter which reads as follows:- This photo shows this table in the background & some of the chairs in ALTHORP HOUSE. When they sold off some furniture the British Oxygen Company bought this table and chairs my uncle William O’Reilly, worked for BOC as an industrial photographer. He bought them from B.O.C back in the 70’s He was with B.O.C until he retired. I inherited them from my uncle after he died in November 2019 These would have been in the house from Princess Diana’s birth right up to her later teen years, the good lady as we know started dating Prince Charles around the age of 16 years old so chances are she left before the chairs did These chairs have been expertly restored back to the original condition, the leather upholstery had dried and become unusable, we had a sample sent to the finest leather tannery in the country where they matched the hides and the colour exactly, they were then reupholstered by a third-generation Victorian trained upholsterer. The frames were then cleaned and French polished by again the finest traditional French polisher in the industry, these have been a no expense spared conservation restoration project Dimensions Height:- 98cm Width:- 63.5cm Depth:- 65.5cm Seat height:- 50cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask London’s finest surviving 18th-century aristocratic palace, built for the first Earl Spencer. Spencer House was conceived as a ‘Temple of the Arts’ for the entertainment of the political, social and cultural elite, and considered the most sumptuous private residence ever built in London. Occupying a central space in the history of British architecture, the state rooms designed by John Vardy and James 'Athenian' Stuart were among the first neo-classical interiors in Europe. The house contains a small but significant collection of Old Master paintings and 18th-century English furniture on long-term loan from the V&A and Temple Newsham, including original pieces designed by the architects and displayed in their 18th-century locations. Also on loan is an important group of five major historical paintings by Benjamin West from the Royal Collection Trust and important paintings and works from private and public collections including Tate, the Royal Academy, Royal Pavilion and Museums (Brighton and Hove) and the National Trust.
