Danish folk art brutalist dining wicker rattan chairs from 1930s

About the Item

4 Danish folk art wicker dining chairs from 1936. Made by cabinetmaker E. Druse in 1936 - signature on the back of the chairs. These four highback chairs are so unique with their carved faces and decorations. Each chair is like a piece of art that you can keep looking at. Maybe they are trolls, who knows? I don't know whether to call the chairs brutalist or folk art, because I have never seen anything like them in Denmark. Each of the faces shows a different mood. There is the “happy face”, the “angry face”, the “sad face” and the “silly face” sticking out its tongue. The chairs have so much humor, and the cabinetmaker has clearly also been proud of his work, since he has put such a powerful signature on the back of the chairs. The woodwork gives a big and chunky look, and the patinated oak and rustic jute wicker a strong expression. They deserve a home where they can fit in - not just physically but also aesthetically. WHO was E. Druse? My research leads me to Eckhardt Druse (1888-1963) - a well-known furniture dealer located in the town of Køge, 30 kilometers south of Copenhagen. At the beginning/middle of the 20th century, Eckhardt Druse was an enterprising gentleman, so perhaps the chairs were either made by him or for him. Nevertheless, the chairs are a little piece of history that makes them much more than just a piece of furniture. Go ahead and take a seat :-)
