Henning Kjaernulf Danish Ladderback Scalloped Chairs

About the Item

Set of 6 Henning Kjaernulf dining chairs by Nyrup Møbelfabrik, 1960/70s. Portman Gallery is pleased to offer these elegantly proportioned high back dining chairs in oak with scalloping details on the slats and apron. The wood has beautiful grain and the seats have been reupholsterred in a navy blue bouclé fabric. The seats are comfortable. In very good vintage condition with minor signs of patina and wear. Scattered marks and imperfections. HxWxD 102cm x 51cm x 43cm. The chairs are unmarked, and as far as I can tell all of Nyrup’s furniture was unmarked, so the designer is technically an attribution. Purchased in Denmark, they are currently in Brooklyn, NY. Free hand delivery to the tri-state area. With thanks to H Gallery for the following biographical information on the designer: Danish midcentury designer and architect, Henning Kjaernulf is somewhat of a mystery. A lot more is known about his designs than Kjaernulf himself. His wooden designs, crafted to perfection, speak for themselves. Kjaernulf mainly designed for the Danish manufacturers EG Kvalitetsmobel, Nyrup Møbelfabrik, and Vejle Stole Møbelfabrik. The latter produced the designer’s well-known teak extending dining table design. The historic archives of the Danish municipality, Stenlille, reveal the history of Nyrup Møbelfabrik, mentioning Kjaernulf’s architectural designs for the company’s factory, referring to him as an architect based in Odense, Denmark.

Provenance: Francis Sultana, London Sotheby’s, New York, 2021 ‘‘Mattia Bonetti’s artistic creativity is limitless. He has the skill and the imagination to create a range of artistic worlds; from the most meticulous and exact, to the most bizarre and outlandish, his works are always so diverse and yet always retain an element of his own distinctive style.’’ Jacques Granges, Interior Designer. Mattia Bonetti (born 1952) is a Paris-based artist and designer. His work has been called whimsical, surreal and unique. Consistently merging the boundaries between art and design, Bonetti, who was born in Lugano, Switzerland, initially studied textile design at the Centro Scolastico per l’Industria Artistica. Moving to Paris in 1972, Bonetti initially worked within his chosen field of textile design, but then developed a career as a stylist and photographer. Working in black and white film, Bonetti would shoot miniature interiors that he had made by hand, which in turn led to his love of furniture. Bonetti’s work has always begun with a free-hand sketch, which is then fabricated in materials including patinated bronze, gilding, acrylic, wood, rock crystal, marble, glass and gemstones. In the 1970s Bonetti met the designer Elizabeth Garouste, and their partnership began with the interior décor of the famous Parisian nightclub Le Palace and restaurant Le Privilege. Employing a neo-Baroque language, blended with prehistoric and primitive touches, Bonetti’s terracotta...
