About the Item

A scarce set of ten early first edition "Fledermaus" chairs designed by Josef Hoffmann for the Wiener Werkstatte and featured in the J. & J. Kohn catalogues as model no. 728. Hoffmann chose this design for the seating in Vienna’s Cabaret Fledermaus that opened in October 1907. The chair's distinctive design features a sleek and elegant bentwood frame in black lacquered finish, swooping armrests and curved backrests are both elegant and stately. The fledermaus chairs are a perfect representation of Hoffmann's iconic Viennese Secessionist style, which was characterized by its simple, geometric shapes and use of high-quality materials. For the time the design was a bold and radical departure for the gilded tradition of European nightclubs and instantly gained popularity.
