About

Norman Cherner for Plycraft, set of four dining chairs, walnut and plywood, United States 1957. These four Classic Norman Cherner plywood chairs date from 1957. Their iconic shape resembles something like a delicate butterfly, yet do not be mislead as these chairs are much more sturdy than you might believe at first sight. One of the most interesting details in this design is the extremely narrow point through which the seat and back are connected, creating a lot of space around the piece. This design combines the best of plywood and Mid-Century Modern design. Norman Cherner (1920-1987) was originally trained as an architect, was an important 20th Century Furniture designer. He is known for his use of all the innovative materials and techniques that developed after the war. Cherner was originally trained in the Bauhaus tradition at Columbia University (were he later became a teacher). This tradition led Cherner to investigate furniture in one discipline only. His most iconic design, the moulded plywood chair, that he designed for Plycraft in 1958. This chair is now an icon of twentieth century design and can be found in galleries and design collections worldwide, including the Vitra Museum and the MoMA. Please note that price is per item.
