Set of 12 Antique Scottish Sheraton Revival Mahogany Inlaid Dining Chairs

About the Item

An attractive set of 12 late Victorian/Edwardian mahogany and inlaid Sheraton Revival dining chairs by James Garvie & Sons of Aberdeen. The boxwood strung backs with inlaid pierced centre splat and standing on boxwood strung square tapering legs with gently out-curved legs to the rear. The armchairs with elegant curving arm rests. All upholstered in green leather with padded, slightly serpentine shaped seats. With ‘James Garvie & Sons, Aberdeen and London’ label to the underside. In good condition with no loose joints, some dents and marks consistent with age and use, an old repair to the arm on one which is not easily seen, and a repair on the back to another. The upholstery has been recently redone. The original dining table and leaf holder for these chairs is available to buy separately at the time of listing. Side chairs: 18.75in wide x 20.5in deep x 35.25in high (47.5cm x 52cm x 89.5cm) Seat height - 19in (48.5cm) Carver chairs: 22in wide x 22in deep x 37in high (56cm x 56cm x 94cm) Seat height - 19.5in (49.5cm) James Garvie & Sons were active in the late 19th century with cabinet workshops and a furniture showroom in Aberdeen on Rose Street and at 425 Union Street, as well as premises in London. Advertising as ‘Makers & Designers of Interior Woodwork, Furniture & Upholstery. Carvers and Decorative Artists.’ as well as ‘Contractors for the Crathie Church’ where Queen Victoria worshipped from 1848. Their skill in woodwork can be seen in their superb Grinling Gibbons style carvings in mahogany and limewood within the River Wear Commisioners’ Building in Sunderland.
