About the Item

This is an exceedingly attractive set of ten English George III dining chairs, remaining a full pure set with two arm chairs and eight side chairs, all in outstanding condition. With deeply patinated surfaces and many layers of wax over an early finish, the mellow solid carved mahogany of the chairs positively glows. They remain in a very good state of preservation, most retaining their original blocking and with only minor normal repairs throughout. In terms of form, the chairs carefully walk between the overly ornate qualities of the Chippendale period and the more austere form of it's Neoclassical successor. Beneath the soft serpentine of the crest rail, the carefully pierced variform splats frame an interesting central motif resembling a spindle of spun wool. The stiles pull inward along the length of the back and through the foot, curved along the backside for the upper two thirds of the chair and squaring off for the backsweep of the legs. The trapezoidal seat is set with a slip seat, the chair frame raising around this with a plain and unembellished apron. The seat frame is held together with tenon-mortised joints secured by the glued corner blocks, this augmented in many joints with the addition of wooden pegs. The structure is further secured with an H-form stretcher, the medial and back brace tenoned into the sides and legs. The legs are masculine in their Marlborough form, the inner edges chamfered to slip the profile of the chair. For anyone with a period or classically designed interior, this is an exceedingly fine set of early antique English dining chairs. Remaining sturdy and strong throughout, the chairs are a testament to the longevity of excellent craftsmanship - designed in a style that never goes out of taste, this is a set that will certainly be cherished in your home for a lifetime. Measurements: [arm chairs] 36 3/8" H x 24 1/4" W (at base of the arms) x 21 7/8" D x 18" H to seat; [side chairs] 36 3/8" H x 21" W x 19 7/8" D x 18" H to seat Condition Report: Chairs retain an early glowing surface, probably not original on much of the surface but deeply patinated and gorgeous beneath many layers of later wax. Some finish loss to most chairs on the back of the frame, probably from old sale stickers. Surface wear and abrasions throughout as expected, though overall the finishing is quite well preserved. Tenon mortising of some chair frames strengthened with wooden pins. Front left foot of one side chair with a 4.5x .5" vertical splice on inner edge. All upholstery is thoroughly stained and must be changed. One arm chair with cracks in splat and minor repaired cracks (one cracked piece a bit loose - we can certainly have this reglued upon request); other chair splats with repaired vertical cracks, none noteworthy. One side chair with patched repair at knee. Some feet worn, particularly the back feet, one chair with some minor patching to the rear feet. Minor joint separations as expected, all chairs sturdy and strong. Many chairs retain their original interior blocking.
