Set of Twelve Chiavari Chairs in lacquered beechwood with a two-tone woven cord seat, “Baletta” model, featuring frames in light pastel blue and pink. Crafted in Chiavari, Italy, 1960s. One of the most appreciated Chiavari chair designs of the 20th century is the “Baletta” model. Its simple and slender lines make it suitable for any type of interior. The backrest features three horizontal rails, while the legs are distinguished by ball-shaped feet—a characteristic that inspired its name (baletta means “little ball” in Genoese dialect). This design first appeared in Chiavari manufacturers’ catalogs in the 1940s. The model’s versatility lies in its capacity for customization, allowing individuals to express their unique tastes and creativity. Here, we present a set of chairs in the charming “Pink & Blue” version. Playful and original, these chairs focus on color contrast while maintaining harmony through the delicacy of the chosen pastel tones. For the newly woven seat, an ancient knotting technique, traditional to coastal towns of Italy, has been revisited using a cord in two natural shades. The colors and materials, steeped in tradition and a long history of craftsmanship, enhance the appeal of this exquisite group of “Tre Stecche” chairs. A splendid brass example of the Chiavari style first developed in the coastal town of Chiavari, south of Milan, Italy. This particular specimen is in excellent condition, with a lovely recent restoration of the upholstery, well cushioned, in a tasteful dark green velvet. The chair is in very sound condition and is of a higher quality than others we have handled - notably the shaping of the feet and the back are particularly fine. The original Chiavari chair is a delicate-boned creature in light-weight timber, designed to be both light and strong. It’s turned timber frame gave the opportunity for elaborate decoration which was popular in the mid to late 1800s. The brass version was created in the 1950s as a playful reference to the original, the brass emphasising the elaborate framework.
