19th Century Mahogany Stool

About the Item

A very good quality mid-19th century mahogany stool, of diminutive proportions, having attractive needlework drop in seat to frame with elegant carved decoration, raised on cabriole legs, retaining good colour & patina throughout. Constructed from a particularly high quality of mahogany, hence the exceptional colour and patina which it still retains, this little stool really is quite the charmer. It boasts incredible elegance to its design and somehow, despite its small proportions, it has real presence. The carved decoration at the top of the elegant cabriole legs is a sign of real class and clearly it was made in one of the top 18th century london workshops. The needlework covering to the seat is attractive and in good condition for its age. Despite being old and almost certainly 19th century in age we would not want to guarantee its originality to the stool however as these were regularly swapped around. That said, there are no obvious pointers that it is not original either. Its the absolute perfect size for a whole host of different spots around the home and we should add that it is very much structurally sound, therefore its fit for purpose and function as well as being lovely to look at. Circa 1860. Height 16in. Width 21in. Depth 15in.

Sometimes referred to as coffin stools (although this was much more of a 19th century trend for their usage as opposed to their original purpose in earlier times) the humble antique joint stool was by far the most common form of seating in 16th and 17th century England. Indeed they were made in relatively vast quantities and almost every house would have a selection of them on hand in a variety of difference sizes and heights so that they could be used as required.
