About

Attribution Unknown: Ashanti Prestige Stool from the 19th – 20th centuries. Its form exemplifies the "classical" stool used as an icon of leadership throughout the Ghanian region: a curved seat is supported by four slightly bowed legs and one openwork column, all raised on a stepped platform. Carved from a single piece of wood, these stools often display incised geometrical designs. However, in this case, there is no open designs or carvings. The five supports do evoke the 'one king and surrounding chiefs' and the cosmos 'the four cardinal points and central sun'. Stools are sometimes also discussed with the support described as the "neck" and the seat termed the "head" or "face." This stool has definitely worn with age with scratches and worn corners. There are no significant cracks. It has aged well.
