About the Item

Raphael Navot [Israeli, b. 1977] Acrostic Ottoman, 2021 Cashmere, silk, oak Measures: 16.25 x 28.5 x 23.25 inches 41 x 72.6 x 59 cm Multidisciplinary Raphael Navot identifies himself as a “non-industrial designer.” Navot reinterprets the combination of traditional craftsmanship and fine materials through a 21st century lens. Drawn to raw and refined textures, his inspiration is mainly derived from the materials themselves. “I like natural materials, reworked and pushed to their limits. Anything that speaks to the tactile beings that we are, made of flesh and bone,” says Navot. Viewing organic shapes as a universal language, Navot masters the subtle nuances of texture, form, palette, and material. Born in 1977 in Jerusalem, Navot graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Conceptual Design in 2003. After graduation, Navot established his own studio in Paris to explore design and interior architecture. His first major project in Paris, David Lynch's Club Silencio (2011), earned him international recognition. His subsequent notable projects include the design of Hotel National des Arts et Métiers in Paris (2017), and the library and art gallery at the Domaine des Etangs estate in Massignac, France (2018). Navot has collaborated with brands such as Alessi, Cappellini, Swarovski, Venini, and Roche Bobois for which he won the 2020 Elle Deco International Design award. For his first collaboration with the gallery, Aleatoric (2019), Navot realized a body of work in sand-blasted aged oak inspired by the form of the palm of one’s hand. In order to achieve the patchwork assembly, Navot combined the 7,000 year old technique of ‘mortise and tenon’ with 21st century robotic technology. He lives and works in Paris, France.

Toogood was born in the UK in 1977 and graduated with a BA in the History of Art in 1998 from Bristol University. Upon graduation, she worked as a prop stylist at The World of Interiors before establishing Studio Toogood in 2008. Working in a diverse range of disciplines from sculpture to furniture and fashion, Toogood often reinterprets and reinvents classical tropes and references from art history by introducing a new aesthetic. Since the conception of her immediately recognizable voluminous Roly-Poly chair (2014), she has been considered among the great form-givers of the 21st century. Her career is marked out by the discrete Assemblages, each of which conjures a compact world of interrelated ideas, forms, and materials. Assemblage 5...
