Iconic and historical footstool with an X-shaped structure in wood and leather; the solid curved frame is made of beech wood painted black, has a sling of sturdy canvas and a cushion of fine leather marked "Poltrona Frau"; it was designed together with the homologous chair Model Falcon by Sigurd Ressell for the Norwegian company Vatne Mobler (world leader in the manufacture of prestigious furniture) between 1971 and 1975 the original manufacturer's label is still on the wooden frame (see photo). The story began in 1971 when Sigurd Ressell designed the "Falcon" model for the Norwegian company. It was an immediate success and was for many years the most important product for Vatne Moble; the "Falcon" is not only a design icon but a unique and comfortable work of art. Another added value is the cushion handmade by skilled Italian artisans with the prestigious Pelle Frau leather from the company "Poltrona Frau" which had a collaborative relationship with both Vatne Mobler and Sigurd Ressell. The leather of Frau armchairs has always been the element that distinguishes the quality and reliability of Frau products on an international level. These are prestigious materials, processed as works of art, with operations that still smell of craftsmanship and the skill of the hands, the company uses a method of tanning the leather of 21 steps (compared to the typical industry of 12-15). The company is a symbol of the made in Italy all over the world, the ideal synthesis between craftsmanship and modernity; but also the synonym of discreet and strongly international luxury that applies to fittings for cars, offices, airplanes, theaters, and parliamentary rooms. Poltrona Frau is the repository of a manual skill that has been refined in over ninety years of history. In fact, the birth of the company dates back to 1912, when Renzo Frau founded the first laboratory in Turin. Fifty years later, the company moved to Tolentino, after being acquired by the Nazareno Gabrielli group. Franco Moschini became the first director and then owner, starting in 1990. In 2001 Poltrona Frau acquired Gebrüder Thonet Vienna and the Gufram brand. In 2004 it acquired Cappellini and in 2005 total control of Cassina, and with it Alias. Therefore, whoever owns an armchair or an object branded Frau, owns a piece of history, a piece of furniture of the highest quality, of lasting luxury, a distinctive and absolutely reliable piece. Sigurd Resell Sigurd Resell was born in Norway in 1920. Resell, began his career when a drawing for a competition was praised by Niels Vodder, a master furniture maker who created many beautiful works together with Finn Juhl. Later, a prototype was made from the drawing In 1958, his SR 600 won an award at the Copenhagen Cabinetmaker's Guild Exhibitions for artisans in Denmark. One of Resell's representative works, the Falcon chair, produced by Vatne, a Norwegian furniture manufacturer, has been a long-standing item in Europe for over 30 years. Very active was his collaboration with the company "Poltrona Frau". The footrest is in good condition. Vatne Møbler

Norwegian furniture manufacturer Vatne Møbler has a rich legacy underscored by visionary collaborations with iconic Norwegian furniture designers. The company’s mid-century modern and Scandinavian modern lounge chairs and armchairs are known for their quality leather upholstery that acquires a beautiful patina over time.

Vatne Møbler was established in 1946 by Knut Sæter in the village of Vatne, Norway. Sæter was an interior architect who studied at the Bergen School of Arts and Crafts. He designed and manufactured the company’s first pieces. In 1955, interior architect Gerhard Berg started working for Vatne Møbler. His designs — particularly for sofas — soon became popular.

Later in the 1950s, furniture designer Fredrik A. Kayser began creating pieces for Vatne Møbler. His furniture earned the company international acclaim. In 1960, Kayser’s 711 chair for Vatne Møbler won first place at an Industry Council chair competition.

After Kayser died in 1968, the company was overseen by interior designer Sigurd Resell. Resell’s most enduring contribution to Vatne Møbler was the 1970 Falcon armchair. The comfortable, leather-upholstered, X-framed chair came in second place at an Industry Council chair competition. In the 1970s, Resell designed a series of striking glass-topped Falcon coffee tables.

Vatne Møbler’s success lasted through the 1980s, a decade which included a collaboration with furniture designer Olav Eldøy. In 1989, the company encountered financial problems and was sold to Norwegian manufacturer Stokke AS.

In 2002, Knut Sæter’s son, Per Arne Sæter, reopened the family business by relaunching Kayser’s classic designs along with a new collection. Production shut down in 2008 due to the financial crisis, but started again in 2010.

In 2015, the grandson of Knut Sæter, Amund Sæter, published Møbeleventyret Vatne: Boken om Vatne Møbler 1946-1989, a book about the early history of Vatne Møbler. The company continues to operate the Vatne Møbler As store in Norway.
