J.D. Moveis E Decoraçoes Sofa Set: Sofa and Armchairs, Brazil, 1960s
About the Item
JD Móveis e Decorações
Set of two armchairs and sofa, Brazil, 1960s.
One of the most striking armchair & sofa designs produced in mid 20th century Brazil. They are really stunning.
They rarely become available so we are excited to having them in our collection. These have unique design lines that evoke a modernist architectural language.
These armchairs and sofa are finished in wonderfully patterned wood veneer. The ribcage-like back support detail connected by an aluminium cross fixing rod, adds a unique and beautiful feature to this piece.
JD Móveis e Decorações was a design and factory company that produced modern furniture in the mid 20th century in São Paulo.
We can see in these pieces, influence from contemporary furniture: there is strong resemblance with curved jacarandá plywood by Zalszupin, whilst the backrest ribbed detail recalls the Costela chair by Hauner and Eisler.
In fact this design is often attributed to Zalszupin, given the similarity of language to his designs.
These pieces featured a fabric upholstery with the traditional large armrests overhanging the side panels.
As we renovated the upholstery we updated it with an armrest solution that is contained within the side shell panels, to let the lovely curved corners and side panels in full visibility, putting emphasis on the shape of the jacarandá shell, a stunning feature of the design.
The shell and ribs show some normal signs of age. We restored minor loose veneer on edges, and on two of the backrest ribs- but the pieces are overall in very good vintage condition.
The new upholstery is in moss green suede.

- Organic Shape Chair by Moveis Cimo, Brazil 1950sBy Moveis CimoLocated in Whitstable, GBSmall curved chair with organic shaped ivory wood base, 'Pau Marfim'. Brazil, 1950s. The wooden frame is really eye catching; the organic shape frame is divided into three parts, with beautiful rounded edges and curves. There are some minor marks of wear and age, normal in a vintage piece, but frame is in excellent condition. The slightly angled back and seating appear to float on the frame. This chair design is very unique, and at the same time, very ergonomic: The seat and backrest provide a very comfortable seating experience. New upholstery in a light green zigzag fabric.
