About the Item

This stunning lounge chair, designed by Bengt Ruda for Artifort around 1960, is a beautiful example of Mid-Century Modern design. The chair features a sculptural form with a high, winged backrest and graceful, sloping arms, all upholstered in a textured cream/beige fabric. The back of the chair has two distinctive dark buttons that add a touch of subtle detail. The chair is supported by a black lacquered wooden frame and elegantly tapered legs, creating a striking contrast with the light-colored upholstery. This piece combines ergonomic comfort with sophisticated style, making it a perfect addition to any modern or contemporary living space. The chair is a rare and highly sought-after example of Bengt Ruda's work, showcasing the timeless elegance and innovation of Scandinavian design. Dimensions W 73cm/28.74in x D 92cm/36.22in x H 97cm/38.19in, SH 40cm/15.75in, SD 48cm/18.9in. Designer Bengt Ruda (1918–1999) was a Swedish architect and furniture designer known for his innovative contributions to mid-century modern design. He first gained recognition while working for the prestigious department store Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in the early 1950s, where his modern furniture designs earned him a reputation for innovation. In 1956, Ruda was recruited by IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad to become the company's very first formally trained designer. His appointment marked a significant step for the then-fledgling company, bringing a new level of design expertise. Ruda's work was notably influenced by Italian design, a style reflected in one of his earliest and most celebrated pieces for the brand: the "Cavelli" easy chair. Designed in 1959, this chair was famously described in the IKEA catalog as a "modern aristocrat," and today, it is a valuable collector's item. Beyond his influential work with IKEA, Bengt Ruda is also highly regarded for his various chair designs for Nordiska Kompaniet and the manufacturer Artifort, solidifying his legacy as a key figure in Scandinavian design.
