European Oak Panelled Box Chair in Sheepskin, Europe, 1940s

About the Item

While dating from the 1940s, this chair has an entirely unique look that cannot be pinned to a single era or even style movement. This is the charm of this chair as well, as it can be rightfully called one-of-a-kind. The mid-century modern design movement began in the 1940s, as a straightforward style that seemed appropriate in wartime. Furniture was about being minimal, serving a purpose, and function became the primary focus of all designs. The design of this chair goes against almost all of these characteristics, except for quality and functionality. The whimsical design is reminiscent of historic furniture like medieval box throne chairs, yet, boasts several elements that are closer to the modernist movement. The result is a distinctive look that is defined by the oak panels comprising the body. The panels are arranged symmetrically - nine on each side - and have hand carved lines and showcase the round wooden pins of the joinery. The structure is built in an obtuse “opening” angle, therefore the chair appears welcoming, perfect for lounging. The legs have a much more restrained construction with box stretchers, leaving the focus on the upper body. The upholstery is just as much a decorative element as the wooden structure. The lush sheepskin overflows the oak frame both on the top and the bottom, where it is cut in a scalloping pattern. The two materials pair exceptionally well making this chair even more special. • Danish Cabinetmaker Lounge Chair in a Patterned Bouclé Fabric, Denmark 1940s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
This beautiful Danish cabinetmaker lounge chair recalls the peak of Danish Mid-Century Modern design. Thanks to its curved shape, this model is exceptionally cosy and elegant. Curved chairs like this are statement pieces in any space, but they can also adapt to a variety of styles thanks to their universal appeal. With its classic shape paired with modern design, the generous size, and fully upholstered body, this lounge chair is outstanding, even when measured to the many beautiful models created in Denmark during the mid-century era. The large, curved design is reminiscent of the Chesterfield style, with rolled arms and a curving back, short feet, and button tufting. While the impression may recall the historic style, it is its more streamlined, modern interpretation with fewer decorative elements and a much lighter colour palette. The stitches on the back create a scalloped look that sections the back, enhancing the voluptuous size. The Danish design idiom, among other things, was centred on gentle yet robust support for the spine - a quality that engender contentment and well-being, a defining characteristic of Danish culture. The visual appearance however, is not the only thing that echoes Danish design, but also the exquisite craftsmanship under the fully upholstered body. The short, mismatched stained beech legs add a modern, organic feel, balancing out the voluptuous profile of the sofa. The front legs differ in their angle and shape from the back ones, adding visual interest, while the masterful sense of proportions and the soft upholstery guarantee functionality and comfort. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The sofa has been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric.
